Dear Patient,

Nipple reconstruction and tattooing of the nipple areola complex are typically the final steps in the breast reconstruction process and is usually done after the breast mound has been reconstructed.

The choice of technique depends on various factors including the patient’s individual anatomy, their preferences, and the recommendations of Dr. Levine.

There are several techniques for nipple reconstruction, including:

Local Tissue/“Purse-String Closure”

Dr. Levine creates a nipple mound by making a small incision in the breast mound, shaping the tissue to resemble a nipple. Sutures (stitches) are then used to cinch the tissue around the nipple mound, giving it a more natural, raised appearance. It is important to note that with this technique, the nipples will at first appear to be too large.

This is to account for the reduction that will occur over the following months as they shrink in size by about 50%. Approximately 6 weeks after the nipple reconstruction, the areola may be then created using tattooing.

3D Tattooing

Sometimes, instead of surgical reconstruction, 3D tattooing is used to create the appearance of a nipple and areola.

Our skilled tattoo artist uses shading and coloring techniques to mimic the three-dimensional appearance of a natural nipple and areola.
